How to Get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi: All Your Options
How Do You Get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi?
The most popular and practical way to get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi is by charter or scheduled light aircraft, taking 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes from Wilson Airport (WIL) in Nairobi to one of the Mara’s seven airstrips. The road journey from Nairobi takes 5–7 hours in a safari vehicle. Both options have merit depending on your budget, group size, and time constraints.
Option 1: Light Aircraft (Recommended for Most Travellers)
Wilson Airport (WIL) in Nairobi’s Lang’ata suburb is the departure point for all light aircraft to the Masai Mara. Both scheduled and charter services operate throughout the day.
Scheduled Flights (Safarilink / Air Kenya)
- Safarilink and Air Kenya operate scheduled services from Wilson to Mara airstrips (Keekorok, Musiara, Olare, and others)
- Multiple departures daily, typically 07:00–12:00
- Cost: approximately USD 150–250 per person one-way
- Aircraft: Cessna Caravan (12-seat) or similar
- Luggage limit: 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags (strictly enforced)
Private Charters
- Available from USD 800–1,500 one-way for a 5-seat aircraft
- Depart on your schedule, land at the airstrip closest to your specific camp
- Worth considering for groups of 4+ people where per-person cost approaches scheduled fare
Option 2: Road Transfer (4WD Safari Vehicle)
The road from Nairobi to the Masai Mara passes through the Rift Valley escarpment and the Narok district. In a 4WD vehicle the journey takes 5–7 hours depending on road conditions (the final 50 km from Narok is unpaved and can be rough in the rainy season).
Road Transfer Pros and Cons
- ✅ No luggage weight restrictions — bring as much as you like
- ✅ Opportunity to stop at Rift Valley viewpoints, Nairobi National Park flyover
- ✅ Significantly cheaper than flying for large groups
- ❌ 5–7 hours on the road is a full day, losing at least one morning game drive
- ❌ Rough road for the last 50 km can be uncomfortable
- ❌ Road conditions deteriorate significantly during the long rains (April–June)
